The Yorkshire Estate of the Duke of Devonshire

Bolton Abbey is an estate in Wharfedale in North Yorkshire, England, which takes its name from the ruins of the 12th-century Augustinian monastery—now generally known as Bolton Priory. It sits within the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, adjacent to the village of Bolton Abbey.
The estate has a lot to offer visitors, including many miles of all-weather walking routes and a variety of attractions for people of all ages. The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway currently terminates at Bolton Abbey station one and a half miles/2.5 km from Bolton Priory.

There will be 3 walks;

Walk Details will be added as they become available, but by Saturday 7th November

A Party Walk Bolton Abbey 2015

Walk Leader: Jennifer Mathias
Total Distance: 10+ Miles

Total Ascent/descent:  1580ft

This walk is Simple to Simon's Seat!  It is there and back.  We leave the expensive car park and walk down to the River Wharfe (again)and cross it by bridge or stepping stones following the river for about a mile then up to join a path leading us up through The Valley of Desolation and onto the moors where we see several outcrops of rocks and beyond to Simon's Seat.

It is a long steady climb and those who want to can clamber to the top for the views of the moors. Then we will return the same way until we get to the River and follow the path past the Cavendish Pavillion and up onto the road for the village and refreshment.

B Party Walk Bolton Abbey 2015

Walk Leader: John Wilson
Total Distance: 6.5miles
Total Ascent/descent: 1100ft
A short interesting walk about 6 ½ miles long 650 ft ascent and decent. It starts by walking along the river bank for a little over a mile then ascending through woodland following a stream for much of the way reaching a picturesque waterfall for the short break. We then leave the woodland over green fields followed by heather covered open ground where grouse can be seen. After a quick decent we cross our path at a bridge over the river returning via the pavilion café.

C Party Walk Bolton Abbey 2015

Walk Leader: Joan and Shirley
Total Distance: 6+ miles
Total Ascent/ descent: nothing significant (750ft)

It is some years since we walked at Bolton Abbey so we thought you wouldn't mind revisiting this walk along the river Wharfe.  After coffee we go through the hole in the wall with a lovely view of the Priory then on to the bridge over the river - you can use the stepping stones if you want!  The walk continues mainly along the side of the river, sometimes seeing the peaceful shallows with beautiful scenery, sometimes just leaving the side of the river, until we reach the aqueduct, and then Barden Bridge where we turn round and start the return journey.  On the way back we see a different aspect of the river when we pass the fearsome Strid, then on towards the Cavendish Pavilion with a welcome cup of tea.

Although we are walking through woods and through open ground by a river, the path is not flat!  We will not climb any mountains, but the walk is undulating, with quite a lot of 'ups and downs'.
