Castleton is an outstandingly pretty village situated at the head of the lovely Vale of Hope, in the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District National Park. Castleton is surrounded on 3 sides by steep hills and the mighty bulk of Mam Tor looms high, 2 miles to the north west of the village. On a hill, overlooking Castleton, is the ancient Peveril Castle.  ...........click to follow

A Walk from Castleton 2019

Walk Leader: Brian Thorne
Total Distance: 10 mls app
Total Ascent/Descent: 1775ft ap

A wonderful circular walk, taking in a spectacular limestone dale, high pastures and one of the classic Peak District edges.

Leaving Castleton, we climb up through Cavedale on the “Limestone Way,” and through the high pastures around Rowter Farm. Further climbing takes us to the summit of Mam Tor at 1696 ft. Dodging the D of E parties, we work our way down to Hollins Cross and then up to Back Tor with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. A final climb then leads to the end of the ridge at Lose Hill before our descent to the village of Hope and a return to Castleton along scenic field paths.

B Walk from Castleton 2019

Walk Leader: Jennifer Mathias
Total Distance: 7.5 miles app
Total ascent/descent: 1500 ft app

We leave Castleton car park along a path to Hollowford Lane. Then on passed farms to Spring House Farm, then we start the climb to Lose Hill. It is steep but we have time to take it steadily. ( The A party may overtake us! ) Then we follow The Great Ridge, which is undulating. There are a couple of steep descents. After Mam Tor we cross fields to follow a farm road to The Limestone Way back into Castleton.

C Walk from Castleton 2019

Walk Leader: Gwyn Jones
Total Distance: 5.25 mls
Total ascent/descent:

 To HOPE and back.

This is a fairly flat walk with no climbing.  There are a number of gates but not too many stiles. We start with a loop round the back of Castleton and pick up the lane to the training centre. From there we make our way on tracks and through fields to the village of Hope.  Our return to Castleton is alongside the river Peaksale Water.
