406 Walks from Llangollem 2020

Our first walk of the season will be on

Saturday 14th March 2020

and will be from

Llangollen

renowned for it's spectacular scenery

Our first walk of the season will be from the famous Welsh town of Llangollen nestling within the beautiful Dee Valley in the North East of Wales. It is a town of varied parts, with plenty to interest the most discerning of visitors. You will probably know it for the Eistedford, or the horse drawn canal boats, or the Steam Railway, but there is plenty more about it so take a peek here

Llangollen is a small town and community in Denbighshire, north-eastWales, on the River Dee at the edge of the Berwyn mountains and the ClwydianRange and Dee Valley AONB

There will be three walks:

  • A Walk led by; Garth Raybould
  • B Walk led by; Mark Stanford
  • C Walk led by: Gwyn Jones

A Walk from Llangollen 2020

Walk Leader: Garth Raybould
Distance: 10 mls
Total Climbing:1600ft

This walk gives access to some of the most spectacular scenery in north-east Wales, usually missed by those who pass straight through Llangollen on their way to Snowdonia. We ascend quickly from the town to the ruined 13th century castle of Dinas Bran – the steepest ascent on the walk to get our circulation going! After descending the other side of the hill we take the lane eastwards for a few hundred yards and then gently ascend Trevor Rocks, the southern end of Eglwyseg Mountain, to head generally northwards along the top of the scarp slope.

Views always depend on the weather, of course, but we should have a stunning panorama of Dinas Bran, the Dee valley and the Llantysilio hills.  At the north end of the scarp we do a U-turn and follow it back southwards along its base on the Offa’s Dyke Path, before diverting westwards into the Eglwyseg River valley.  This takes us past Valle Crucis Abbey, and we follow the Llangollen canal back into the town.

C Walk from Llangollen 2020

Walk Leader: Gwyn Jones
Distance: 5mls app
Total Ascent/Descent:430 ft

This walk is different to that shown originally, as having done the recce I found there were too many steep bits. This one has a few slopes but nothing too difficult. We start along the canal and turn off after just over a mile towards Valle Crucis Abbey – a 12th century monastary now mostly in ruins. We then descend to cross a footbridge heading towards the very small hamlet of Hendry. From here we cross some fields (muddy at the time of recce) to a lane which takes us to Llantisilio church. We go through the litch gate and head down to join the river at Horseshoefalls. We then follow the canal back to Llangollen (1.8 miles).

Revised C walk anticlockwise.

The walk along the canal is level but then there are some gradual ascents.
