'A Walk of Two Valleys'.
From Grasmere there is no walk which doesn't go
'up'! Our walk does have quite a bit of
'up' but none particularly steep and we have lots of time to admire the
magnificent views. We start off along the lane which goes past the Garden
Centre heading towards the lake. We turn right from this lane just by the
cottage with the letter box in the wall, and ascend the lane which soon becomes
a stony footpath passing by woodland before heading into open fell where we can
look back to the Grasmere valley and hills. The path then descends steeply to
the Grasmere/Chapel Stile lane. We follow the road down into Elterwater, the
join the Chapel Stile/Skelwith Bridge road before ascending towards High Close.
After this section of road walking we emerge on to the popular footpath along
Loughrigg Terrace before dropping down to Lake Grasmere. We walk back to the
village by the side of the lake and finally the short section of the road where
we started in the morning.
