347 April walks from Conwy
Our next walking will be from
Conwy
and will take place on

0800hrs prompt from short stay car park in the village
Conwy
castle is a gritty, dark stoned fortress which has the rare ability to
evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere. The first time that visitors
catch sight of the castle, commanding a rock above the Conwy Estuary and
demanding as much attention as the dramatic Snowdonia skyline behind it,
they know they are in the presence of a historic site which still casts
a powerful spell.
There will be three walks
- A Walk led by: Garth Raybould
- B Walk led by: Gwyn Jones
- C Walk Led by: Terry Simmons

This is a stretching walk of about 4¾ hours (excluding
stops) taking in the Conwy valley, the moorlands forming the NE end of the
Carneddau range and finally Conwy mountain.
The effort is rewarded with stunning river, hill, mountain and coastal
scenery (in good weather!) and at the end there are many good pubs and
tea-houses in Conwy for immediate refreshment.
From the car park we get our circulation going
straightaway with a short but stiff climb across farmland and through woods
onto Bryn Iocyn. (At the top of the hill
see if you can spot the basalt dyke between the trig point and the radio mast.) Then downhill for a while and through a caravan
park: road reconstruction works are
going on here so please watch out for moving plant. We cross the Afon Gyffin in Henryd village
and then start our gradual climb onto the moors, passing through Parc Mawr
nature reserve and calling at the chapel and holy well of Saint Celynin. Reaching the crest of the moors we turn
sea-ward again and have an easy jaunt down to the Sychnant Pass, once the only
road from Conwy to NW Wales. A final
pull over the ancient volcano of Conwy Mountain (where we pass through Neolithic
hut circles and an Iron Age hill-fort) brings us back into Conwy.
B walk from Conwy 2014
Walk Leader: Gwyn Jones
Total Distance: Approx 8 Miles
Total Ascent/descent:
It is very difficult to walk at Conwy without doing some climbing. There are a number of “ups” on this walk – but none of them are severe.
We start by walking through the town and then make our way up along the southern side of Conwy mountain to the Sychnant Pass. From here we walk above the Fairy Glen – enjoying the views across towards Anglesey – and over the ridge to overlook the Conwy valley. We then descend gradually back down to Conwy.

C Walk from Conwy 2014
Walk Leader: Terry Simmons
Total Distance: 6.5miles
On arrival we make our way across the town Car Park heading for the "Castle Gallery Cafe" where arrangements have been made for coffee etc.
Fully refreshed we head for the harbour, heading North fro the Sychant Pass where we may stop for our picnic. After this our destination is the North Wales path where we may enjoy excellent views over the estuary of Conwy. We then make our way down back to the houses near the metal gate where we originally went, then back into town.
