May Walks [328] from Betws-y-Coed
Our Walk this month will be from
Betws-y-Coedin Snowdonia National Park, North Wales
and will be on
Saturday 12th May 2012
Betws-y-Coed is the principal village of the Snowdonia National Park.
Covering more than 800 square miles, the park is a region of haunting
beauty and grandeur, of wild rocky mountains, hidden valleys, cascading
rivers, still glacial lakes and deep forests.
We last visited Betws-y-coed in October 2009, when we had a lovely day.
There will be three walks;

A Walks form Betws-y-Coed
Walk Leader: Tony McDonald
Total Distance: 11.1miles
Total Ascent/Descent: 2296/2074 ftA Walk Route [click to enlarge] |
The
walk starts at Llanrwst (Pronounced as clan roost) and takes in part of the
historic village crossing the river by historic bridge. The walk is largely
along good pathways most of which have a variety of exceptional scenery.
Although four an A walking no particular great heights are ascended, the walk
is challenging and very enjoyable. A particularly nice thing about this walk is
that there are very many changes in scenery which ranges from, historic
churches, historic monument to the fantastic treeline surrounding a most
beautiful area which supplies a reservoir. There is a considerable area of
paths which are not well used and therefore there is a considerable amount of
beautiful flowers to be seen. Towards the end of the walk, there is a glimpse
of Swallow Falls and various other small waterfalls along the river leading
into Betws-y-Coed the last 2 miles of the walk offer some beautiful tourist
style walks along the river. The overall distance covered is 11.1 miles, and on
the day we did the reconnoitre some of the path were slippy and therefore it is
recommended that walking poles are used.
B Walks from Betws-y-Coed 2012
Walk Leader: Gwyn Jones
Total Distance: 8.5 miles
Total Ascent/Descent: 1575 ft
A
linear walk starting at Llanwrst and, hopefully, ending at Betws-y-Coed.
The first mile is along level ground to
Trefriw. From here we climb up through the woods to Llyn Geirionydd and then on
up to the old Hafna Mine.
From here it is all downhill to the Miner’s bridge
and along the riverside to Betws-y-Coed. The climbing is not severe – the
highest point on the walk is about 850 ft.

THE WALK I HAVE SELECTED AND HAVE CARRIED
OUT A RECCE FOR IS THE CONWAY GORGE,
FAIRY GLEN,CONWY FALLS & THE MACHNO FALLS.
THIS CAN BE FOUND IN THE “WALKS AROUND
BETWS-Y-COED”
THERE ARE A FEW PARTS OF THE WALK THAT NEED
TO BE NOTED AND CARE TAKEN.
ON OUR EARLY ROUTE TO BEAVOUR BRIDGE WE
NEED TO BE AWARE OF THE S BEND WHICH IS VERY TIGHT. ITS ESSENTIAL YOU FOLLOW THE LEADERS REQUEST
TO WALK IN SINGLE FILE FOR A FEW YARDS
TO ENSURE SAFETY.
ALSO WHEN WE REACH THE A5 WHERE WE HAVE TO
WALK A FEW YARDS ALONG THIS BUSY MAIN ROAD.
THE WALK TAKES IN MANY VIEWS OF THE
DIFFERENT FALLS HOWEVER THE FIRST OF THESE IS CALLED “THE FAIRY GLEN” WHICH
CARRIES A COST OF 50P PER PERSON I WOULD
LIKE TO THINK WE COULD ALL DO THIS BUT IT IS DEPENDENT ON A] WEATHER & B]
TERRAIN. WITHOUT VISITING THIS IT IS
STILL A PLEASANT WALK.
