Settle, North Yorkshire

"A Walkers Paradise"

Settle  District is at the heart of some of the most beautiful and remote walking in the country. The serenity and tranquillity of the area makes it a walkers paradise. The Yorkshire Dales offers dramatic peaks, limestone scars, steep-sided valleys, heather-clad moorland, swift flowing rivers and plunging waterfalls.

The Forest of Bowland offers the grandeur and isolation of moorland hills and undulating lowlands with their distinctive pattern of settlements, woodland cloughs and river valleys There are routes that will challenge the most experienced of walkers, but there are also plenty of easy short walks and strolls for the less fit or adventurous.

There will be three walks;

• A Walk led by Peter Hitchcock
• B Walk led by Gwyn Jones
• C Walk led by Les Gibson

A Walk from Settle 2016

A Route (clockwise)

Welcome to the first walk of the new season – one which should certainly blow away the cobwebs!

From the main Settle car park (with its free loos!), it’s in at the deep end as we climb sharply out of the town to the East towards the northern edge of Ben Scar which boasts many caves. Most of the climbing is done in this 1st hour. 

  
We continue on solid Pennine Bridleway footing to the top of the Langcliffe Scar moor peeling off eventually to Malham Tarn – the planned lunch spot. From the Tarn, we continue clockwise through a gorge to the foothills of Kirkby Fell and Rye Loaf Hill before veering north again to the Attermire Scar – and a spectacular finish to the walk [with a wee climb again too] before descending into Settle. 

Most of the route is on good track but some parts will be muddy and wet so gaiters are recommended if you have them; we shall be open to the elements also so warm clothing, hat and gloves are essential bearing in mind it is still March. 
At just over 11 miles, the walk is straightforward and we should be finished in under 6 hours. Look forward to joining you!

B Walk from Settle 2016

Total Distance: 8 Miles

Total Ascent/descent: 1100ft

 

B Route map

A walk in three stages. There are two ascents but both are gradual. We start on the Dales Highway and walk for about 3 miles alongside the Ribble up to Stainforth.

We continue on the Dales Highway and climb steadily up onto moorland. There are lovely views to enjoy as we work our way along and down to Feizor.

From Feizor we turn to head back to Settle. The first mile is our second ascent but it is gradual and on good grassland paths. From the top we work our way back down to the Ribble valley and Settle.

C Walk from Settle 2016

Total Distance: 6 Miles

Total Ascent/descent: 600 ft

C Walk Route (anti clockwise)

 Should be a very interesting and varied walk. After our early morning refreshments we set off for a 6 mile walk which includes some gates and a few stiles, walking on roads, fields and bridle paths. We will also be getting up close with the Hoffman limestone kiln works, which I hope you will find fascinating. Lunch should be somewhere close to Stainforth, weather permitting we should be relaxing alongside the river. We then return to Settle keeping the lovely river with it’s rapids and weirs in view most of the way.

This is a change of venue as The Watermill at Ings was flooded out in the recent storm and is not open until repairs have been made. 

Left behind on the bus

Did you leave your boots behind on the bus last Saturday 14th November?

A pair of Hillmaster Boots size 10 1/2 were left behind in the boot of the bus after the Bolton Abbey walk.
